When our client approached us, he owned a beautiful house of character nestled in the heart of a village in Malta. The property consisted of a charming building wrapped around a central courtyard, home to a stunning orange tree. Behind the house was a larger plot of land with a more recent building, which the client found unsatisfactory in terms of architectural style and integration with the property.
The client desired a complete redesign, focused on maximizing the potential of the land at the back, while respecting the original character of the existing house. After a thorough study of the property's exposure to sunlight throughout the day and across seasons, we developed a layout that featured a new villa at the back of the property, while retaining the original house as the entrance to the main residence.
The front part of the original house was restored to its former glory, with the rooms repurposed to function as an entrance space, a meditation area, and a guest wing. The large Mill room became a sophisticated tea and meeting room for hosting business partners and guests, reflecting the client's success and desire to entertain in style.
The new villa at the back was designed with clean, modern lines but incorporated traditional materials like Maltese limestone, lime plaster, and wood cladding. We ensured that the layout took full advantage of natural light, with the villa centered around a striking 18-meter swimming pool. The pool not only serves as a focal point but also as a space for the client’s favorite pastime—swimming.
A connected two-car garage leads directly into the new villa, with a portico offering shelter and connecting the two structures. The expansive grounds feature various pathways and a belvedere for the client to enjoy the views. The project also includes a dedicated office, a spacious master suite with a terrace overlooking the garden, guest rooms, a gym, and an internal elevator.
True to DMA’s signature style, the design integrates lush greenery, including new trees and hanging plants, creating a harmonious blend of nature and architecture. This project has just received the building permit, marking the next exciting phase of its transformation
